TIP OF THE MONTH - MARCH/2009
As you all know, the GST changed to 5% effective January 1, 2008. This month's tip shows you how to change that value in your Simply Accounting software package.
  1. With Simply Accounting open, on the top menu go to "Setup" and then "Settings"
  2. In the left hand column select "Sales Taxes"
  3. You will see two options in the right hand box. Select "Tax Codes"
  4. You will see all tax codes that have been set up for your company.
  5. As you highlight each code (in the code column) you will see a magnifying glass - click on this.
  6. Each sales tax will be listed with their corresponding rate in the rate column (third column from the left)
  7. Change the GST rate to 5.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Repeat steps 5 - 8 for each tax code.
  10. You may want to change the descriptions for each tax code to reflect the proper rate. Simply click on the description to make any adjustments.
  11. Please Note: You will have to be very careful for a few weeks while entering invoices from suppliers as some invoices may still be dated in 2007 and have the GST calculatedat 6%. This is the amount you record. You can override the GST amount when entering the invoices to match what the invoice shows.
